Meet The Physician

Dr. Helo Chen, DO

Dr. Helo Chen graduated from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor of Science in Biology in 1989. He went on to pursue his medical degree at University of North Texas Health Science Center – Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine in Fort Worth. He received his degree as a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine in 1994. His training continued at the Columbia Bay Area Medical Center in Corpus Christi where he completed a traditional rotating internship and family practice residency. Next, Dr. Chen moved to Houston and worked in various clinics from the suburbs to the underserved regions. During this time, he also served in various community positions, including the Vice Presidency of the Houston branch of the Texas Osteopathic Medical Association. Since 2005, he has included a focus of State and Federal Worker’s Injury Compensation in his practice. As his patients testify, Dr. Chen likes to get to know each patient on a personal level so he can customize a treatment plan that best suits the needs of each patient and maximizes his or her recovery. During his free time, he can be found gardening, reading, eating (he’s a foodie!), and spoiling his wife and daughter.

Physician Assistant

Kayla Hahn

Kayla graduated from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with her Bachelor of Science in Health Science in 2017. She continued her studies at Duquesne and in 2018 obtained her Master’s Degree in Physician Assistant Studies. Prior to joining our team at Serenity Medical Centers, Kayla began her career as a physician assistant at a busy Level II Trauma Center in Charleston S.C. There, she worked in a variety of orthopedic sub specialties including trauma, sports medicine, joint replacement, foot and ankle, and pediatrics before focusing on hand and upper extremity surgery. She has always enjoyed the opportunity to work alongside patients with the goal of returning them to the activities that they love. Kayla says that the most rewarding part of her job is making deep connections with her patients and watching their joint efforts in healing come to fruition as they meet and surpass their initial aspirations. In her free time, Kayla enjoys exploring San Antonio with her husband, son, and rescue pup, cheering on the Pittsburgh Steelers, and doing yoga.


Physical Therapist & Associate Clinic Director, San Antonio

Eric Blem, DPT

Dr. Eric Blem graduated from Texas A&M University in 2013 with a Bachelor of Science in Health and Kinesiology, with a focus in Motor Behavior. After graduating Dr. Blem worked in various capacities in outpatient and inpatient healthcare while developing his love for physical therapy. Dr. Blem attended The University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences (USA) in Austin, TX where he graduated with his Doctorate of Physical Therapy (DPT) in 2019. While at USA Dr. Blem was his class representative and was awarded the Stanley V. Paris & Catherine E. Patla Award for Excellence in Manual therapy, the Outstanding Flexible Physical Therapy Student Award, and The USA Honor Council Leadership Award. In addition to working as the physical therapist at Serenity Medical Center’s San Antonio Clinic, Dr. Blem serves as the Associate Clinic Director. Dr. Blem enjoys the opportunity to provide individualized care to each of his patient’s and help to guide them towards their goals. He finds one of the most rewarding experiences is helping patients to restore confidence in themselves so they may aim to achieve beyond their initial expectations. When Eric is not working, he enjoys hiking, camping, sports, and spending time with his girlfriend and their two dogs; Bo and Brody.

Physical Therapist

Gregory Jackson, DPT

Dr. Gregory Jackson graduated from The University of Texas at Austin in 2017 with a Bachelor degree in Kinesiology and minor in Biology. Dr. Jackson first became interested in PT as a teenager after making a full recovery from a clavicular reconstructive surgery. Dr. Jackson then attended Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene where he graduated with his Doctorate of Physical Therapy (DPT) in 2019. When at Hardin-Simmons University, he was taught by leading professionals in the Texas physical therapy realm, receiving education in providing evidence-based quality care. Dr. Jackson’s training included participating in peer-reviewed research presentations and mission work providing Physical Therapy and customizing assistive devices in Peru. Dr. Jackson continues his professional development and is working towards becoming OCS certified. Dr. Jackson’s approach to working with patients involves hands-on patient education through Physical Therapy, so that the patient develops a new understanding about the importance of the steps of rehabilitation for better outcomes. Dr. Jackson loves working with his patients and has a desire to constantly learn more about innovation in Physical Therapy to master his trade. When not working, Greg enjoys being outside hiking, rock climbing, being on the lake, fishing, trying hole-in-the-wall restaurants, and playing drums.

Amy Hurst

Amy has over 20 years of healthcare experience and a wealth of knowledge in clinical skin analysis and treatment, as well as business development and marketing. Amy started her career as a Certified Medical Assistant in 1998 assisting renowned surgeons. She moved into medical office management thereafter. Her passion for medical aesthetics and the empowerment of women led her to obtain her laser certifications in laser hair removal and laser facial resurfacing. Amy is a seventh-generation Texan and a certified advanced scuba diver. She spends as much time as possible with her granddaughter, Ava, and pups, Mason and Frankie.

Maria Gutierrez Cash

Maria has over 20 years of healthcare clinical and administrative experience, and is a wealth of knowledge in insurance and work comp case management. Maria  started her career as a Certified Dental Assistant, then as a TX Licensed Massage Therapist. She moved into clinical case management and medical office management in 2016. Maria describes her life purpose as helping people and she has a passion for being alongside our patients during their injury recovery journey. Maria spends as much time as possible with her family as she can, enjoying traveling, reading, and loom-knitting while listening to Texas country music.

CEO, Practice Owner

Dr. Alina Sholar

Dr. Alina Sholar is blazing a trail in female-led health care businesses, owning and leading Serenity Medical Centers, Skin Science Soul, and Sage Practice Solutions. At Serenity Medical Centers, Sholar’s leadership style is centered on personal and professional development to give her team the resources to expand their careers. Through these businesses, and in honoring her own professional upbringing in biomedical sciences, medicine, surgery and business, she mentors young women in STEM and medicine and passes on her business acumen to women around the globe to build their own startups.

Dr. Sholar is the first physician in her family, but she knew even in her elementary years what she may become. At age 7, she predicted she would be a doctor- either for people or animals. After receiving a full-tuition merit scholarship from the Nelda C. and H.J. Lutcher Stark Foundation in Orange, she received her BS degree in Biomedical Sciences with Magna Cum Laude honors from the College of Veterinary Medicine at Texas A&M University in December 1994.

She started medical school at the University of Texas Medical Branch in 1995. During her medical education, it became apparent that a surgical specialty was her calling. She did surgical research in an esteemed scientific laboratory at University of Texas with her culminating in publication in a prominent scientific journal, Perfusion. She was there awarded the prestigious Janet M. Glasgow Memorial Award and Achievement Citation for Women in Medicine, along with other meritorious honors and accolades like the Robert Wood Johnson Fellowship Award in medicine. She graduated from University of Texas Medical Branch in 1999 then went on to her surgical residencies.

She completed a full five-year residency, including Chief Resident, in General Surgery at the University of Louisville in 2004, where she was awarded Best Resident Instructor and Mentor by the students of the University of Louisville School of Medicine. Dr. Sholar published in the Annals of Surgical Oncology during her General Surgery residency.

She continued her study of surgery by completing an additional residency in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Tennessee, serving as Chief Resident in 2006. Her plastic surgery training included not only aesthetic surgery, but also dermatology, non-invasive and laser aesthetic treatments, reconstruction related to cranio-facial surgery, microsurgery, hand surgery, burn surgery, and breast surgery. She received multiple awards and publications in research areas such as the efficacy of treatment at Tertiary Care Wound Centers and the advanced reconstructive techniques required after major facial trauma and infections in journals including the prestigious Annals of Plastic Surgery. During this time, she also had the privilege of spending time on mission trips in the Republic of Panama where she repaired cleft lip and palates and assisted in complex reconstructive craniofacial procedures for children. She was certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery in 2008.

She has additionally received training and certification from the World Health Organization in Operational Planning regarding preparedness and response for COVID-19, as well as from Johns Hopkins for Epidemics & Outbreaks.
